ROI Factory Glossary

Expert in the Loop™

Definition

Expert in the Loop™ is ROI Factory’s standard that every automated report, AI output and marketing recommendation is reviewed by an experienced marketing analyst before it reaches you. Automation does the volume. An accountable expert does the judgment.

How it works at ROI Factory

An expert analyst reviews your data every month before you do — a scan of your site for technical problems, a check that leads and sales are counted correctly, and a look for odd swings in the numbers, before your written summary is drafted. You’re not flying blind, we’ve got your back.

  • Essential: Google Ads tuned automatically, every change Expert in the Loop™ approved
  • Professional: Monthly Expert in the Loop™ strategy call
  • Strategic: Ads tuned on every platform you pay for, Expert in the Loop™ approved

The operating standard: every month the expert checks that the numbers can be trusted, catches broken tracking, separates real changes from random noise, questions sales credited to the wrong marketing, and recommends the next decision.

Why it matters

AI and automation can build a dashboard, write a summary and adjust a bid in seconds. They can’t tell when the number itself is wrong. A broken tracking tag, a lead counted twice or a sale credited to the wrong ad looks exactly like real performance to a machine, and a report built on it sends your budget in the wrong direction with total confidence.

Expert in the Loop™ puts a person who has seen those failures before between the machine and your decision.

An idea gaining ground, in marketing and beyond

Stanford HAI’s Ge Wang has argued that AI systems should be designed with humans in the loop rather than aiming for full automation. Clark Quinn goes a step further on his Learnlets blog: generative AI needs an expert in the loop, not just a human, because only someone with domain expertise can judge whether the output is right. In healthcare, Wolters Kluwer has practicing clinicians review its generative AI content, an approach it calls clinical experts-in-the-loop.

Marketing is arriving at the same conclusion. In The Wall Street Journal’s September 30, 2026 report on the rise of the marketing engineer, Profound co-founder James Cadwallader argued that because marketing quality is so hard to verify, a person will always have to act as the adjudicator of what AI agents build.

ROI Factory applies the same standard to marketing data, where a confident wrong answer costs budget instead of credibility.

What is Expert in the Loop™?

Expert in the Loop™ is ROI Factory’s standard that every automated report, AI output and marketing recommendation is reviewed by an experienced marketing analyst before it reaches the client. Automation does the volume. An accountable expert does the judgment.

How is Expert in the Loop™ different from human in the loop?

Human in the loop only requires that a person approves what the machine produces. Expert in the Loop™ requires that the person be qualified to catch what the machine gets wrong (broken tracking, a sale credited to the wrong marketing, a trend that is really a data error) and accountable for the call.

What does the expert review?

An expert analyst reviews your data every month before you do — a scan of your site for technical problems, a check that leads and sales are counted correctly, and a look for odd swings in the numbers, before your written summary is drafted. You’re not flying blind, we’ve got your back.

Who leads ROI Factory's expert reviews?

ROI Factory is led by Michael McMahon, a 30+ year digital marketing pioneer and founder of Left Field, whose founding clients were Amazon.com and Bank of America. Read his background.

Is Expert in the Loop™ a software product?

No. ROI Factory is a marketing engineering firm, not a software vendor or developer. We build on the best available tools and review every recommendation by hand. Any small utilities we create exist to serve clients, never as products to sell. If we ever earn a referral fee from a partner, we disclose it.
