What Is Marketing Engineering?
Definition
Marketing engineering applies engineering principles to marketing: tracking, data, automation and testing built so every dollar and hour can be traced to a result, and every next investment has a reason.
What’s Your Next Marketing Investment?
Most Importantly, Why?
ROI FACTORY engineers data-driven strategies and performance marketing programs optimized for start-up founders and CMOs.
What a marketing engineer does
- Sets up tracking, and works out which marketing earned each sale, so the numbers can be trusted.
- Pulls ads, search, analytics and CRM data into one set of numbers everyone can trust.
- Tracks what competitors spend, bid on and rank for.
- Works out what a budget is likely to return before the money moves.
- Automates reporting and routine workflows, and designs tests that settle arguments with data.
- Keeps an Expert in the Loop™ on every automated output.
Where the term comes from
Marketing engineering began in academia. Gary Lilien, Arvind Rangaswamy and Timothy Matanovich introduced it in “The Age of Marketing Engineering” (Marketing Management, 1998), arguing that marketing decisions need systematic, analytical methods rather than frameworks alone. Lilien and Rangaswamy’s book Marketing Engineering: Computer-Assisted Marketing Analysis and Planning followed the same year. In 2017, Lilien, Rangaswamy and Arnaud De Bruyn published Principles of Marketing Engineering and Analytics. Lilien is a Distinguished Professor of Management Science at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.
Nearly three decades later, the title went mainstream. On September 30, 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that “marketing engineer” had become the role of the moment, with job listings using the term up 29% on LinkedIn the year before and companies like Figma hiring for it (“Marketers Are Rebranding as ‘Engineers’ to Survive the AI Era”). Skeptics in the piece call it the latest title rebrand. Its advocates argue that because marketing quality is hard to verify, a human has to decide what the automation builds. That is the role of the Expert in the Loop™.
ROI Factory applies the same idea with today’s tools (analytics tools, competitor research and AI) for start-up founders and CMOs.
What is marketing engineering?
Marketing engineering applies engineering principles to marketing: tracking, data, automation and testing built so every dollar and hour can be traced to a result, and every next investment has a reason.
How is a marketing engineering firm different from an ad agency?
An agency is measured on the campaigns it makes. A marketing engineering firm is measured on whether the whole system (data, spend, channels and tests) produces a return you can see and explain.
Is marketing engineering the same as marketing for engineering firms?
No. Marketing for engineering firms is an industry specialty: agencies that market architecture, engineering and construction companies. Marketing engineering is a discipline: applying engineering methods to marketing itself, in any industry.
Does ROI Factory sell its own software?
No. ROI Factory is a marketing engineering firm, not a software vendor or developer. We build on the best available tools and review every recommendation by hand. Any small utilities we create exist to serve clients, never as products to sell. If we ever earn a referral fee from a partner, we disclose it.
